What plane is it?
Discussion
Ok, I live not far from RAF Lyneham and yet again, a large 4 engined passenger jet has taken off from there I believe. Its not some normal passenger jet and deffo has 4 separate under wing engines. Makes a fair racket too so probably not the most recent turbofan engines.
Anyone any idea what it is and why is it flying from there?
I assume its some sort of troop transport but struggling to understand what type of aircraft it is. Any assistance would be great.
Thanks in advance.

It's a former BA 747, and was modified for filming in Casino Royale

More significantly it featured in the video to Westlife's 2007 hit 'Home'http://www.aerospaceweb.org/question/planes/q0297....

Sorry for the late response - busy weekend and felt rough as hell....
Looks like it is the DC-8. Long and thin, four separate engines and pretty much white (from this distance) and running older engines rather than modern turbofans. Spot on chaps.... Thanks. Now that's one question answered that has been bugging me.

Many DC-8s were re-engined with modern CFM 73 turbofans - which are virtually smokeless. There might be a small number floating around with the older generation Pratt and Whitney JT3-D turbofans - which are a lot noisier and smokier.
The original DC-8s had Pratt and Whitney JT3 or JT4 turbojets - which were MUCH smokier and noisier. There are none of them around now.
