I am after a factual but interesting book that covers the history of the RAF and some of the conflicts etc that it has been involved in. From 1st world war to present day ideally.

Would anyone care to recomend a well written book or two that cover the subjects in a readable way?

I wouldn't recommend any one book. There are dozens out there covering the history of the RAF. I tend to read books which concentrate on single operations/campaigns, aircraft or aircrew rather than trying to encompass the whole history.

Don't forget, military flying in the UK is celebtrating its 100th Anniversary this year - the Royal Navy being the ones making the claim on the basis that they ordered their first airship in 1909. The fact that the airship never actually flew is not being mentioned too much.

The Royal Flying Corps (Army) came into being in 1912.

The RAF came into being in 1918 so there were quite a few books released last year due to it being the 90th anniversary of its formation.

I don't have a base for comparison, but i'm going through "History of the Royal Air Force" by Michael Sharpe to get up to speed on the subject. Seems quite factual, interesting and easy to read.
