My ( Slow Burning ) WIG Project
Discussion
Motivated from the direction ( http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... ) <-- that thread went in
Hey guys, just making a quick thread to document my WIG craft creation process. Hopefully i'll learn something along the way. maybe even make one i can ride on.. who knows.
all i know, is its going to be a slow project that will proceed as and when funds allow!
Made my first prototypes this morning from paper. test flight reveals it works!! how about that

The first model, i clipped the wing wrongly, as i let the fuselage open up before trimming the wings, leaving me with not enough wing surface. also the T profile tail when made from paper is just FAR too flimsy... these 2 factors made model 1 a total loss!
Model 2 above, i decided to use a V tail, folded over itself to give a lifting aero profile, ballasted the body with a penny, and a bit of blue-tac
the fuselage is based upon the classic Arrow type paper plane ( http://www.10paperairplanes.com/how-to-make-paper-... ) the most useless design ever as a paper plane! but I needed the length for stability.
Next step is to make a few more models from paper and see what effect different aero changes make to the functionality of it.
i have already brought some 1/16 modelling balsa to make the best shape into a heavier wooden model which should fly/float better

Interesting project. Have you considered Depron for prototyping? It's cheap, you can get it in sheets of varying thicknesses, cut with scissors or a knife, and use supergle with accelerator to stick it. Stiffer than paper but extremely light. Good luck and keep us posted!Hey guys, just making a quick thread to document my WIG craft creation process. cool, ill look into that.
what i've found from my paper tests, is that if its too light, it just doesn't work.. but again, if too heavy, it needs more speed to get airborne, which puts too much G on the poor little model lol

Mk2, made from that Balsa Wood i had laying about.
Floats real nice although, i think i need more rear lift.. or a bigger tail wing ( i ran out of wood for the wing curve, so patched it with paper lol )

I managed to canabalise a Motor from an old scalextric car. just gotta find somethnig to use as a prop, see how far this thing can really go
