Early hours of today
Discussion
I know that a few years back the RAF did a few low level transits over London in the early hours of the morning as part of radar trials/tests with the Tornado. IIRC a suitable densely built up area was needed, and at a time of day when they wouldn't conflict with all the commercial air traffic into LHR/LCY/LGW.
I don't imagine you are likely to get a definite confirmation of what it was, but i wouldn't be suprised if it was a similar type of sortie. It must have been about 15 years ago when I witnessed it but I remember being woken by the first and then seeing out my bedroom window the second Tornado of the pair heading south over the ridge north of London where I live at about 500-600'agl and probably 300kts. That would have put them about 1000'agl over the centre of London.

I think the only single engine (or single exhaust anyhow) jet we operate now is the Hawk isn't it?If so, I doubt it was some kind of test as they wouldn't go to after-burner for a test surely?
Interesting story, unfortunately I doubt we'll get to the bottom of it.
