Hi guys,

My girlfriend and I are looking at getting into boating. We have seen a few boats like the Larson 186 and the Bayliner 185 but we just wanted some advice on where we could use it.

We live in Leeds and i know you can launch in Scarborough as well as at the lakes, but are there other places we could use it. Also, if we wanted a week or 10 days away, is France too far realistically if we are towing it – I am thinking Antibes but are there other areas??

Any advice welcomed.

Cheers
Mark

Phwelli on the N. Wales coast is lovely. There are all sorts of lovely places in the Solent to go to & launch from. Antibes is a good idea, but could you stand the trundle down the Autoroutes at 55mph?!?! You could look at St Malo, Jersey, Cornwall, St Vaast, Benodet etc as alternative but equally nice areas to cruise.

schamlex is right Pwllheli / Abersoch is excellent for boating and is well set up with many park and launch companies and the beach is also suitable to launch from.
With park and launch your boat is stored in the dealers compound and you get dropped in and pulled out by tractor at your request.
No knackering your car, no wheel bearings falling off your trailer on the way home etc. This is in the region of £600 a year which is cheap compared to say replacing a rear bumper/ painting when you hit the tow hitch, or a clutch.

We have more sports boats than probably anywhere in the U.K, I have plenty on the books at our www.boatshed.com office in Pwllheli.

France is realistic, I've just spent two weeks on an Italian lake.

Towed a Maxum 2100sc, took 13.5 hours from Calais with plenty of stops. Speed limit for towing on French moterways is 70mph.

He lists a Nissan Navara in his profile.

Can't say I'd want to tow a big(ish) boat that far myself Towed a 3.5t 27' Regal about 40 miles once with a RR Classic, that was sweaty enough thanks!

Yes I used the Navara, boat weighs about 2 ton all in. Kept the speed betwen 70 and 80 all the way down there, which is no problem in it. Averaged 17mpg though! The only slightly worrying part is as you overtake the HGV's, their poor aerodynamics push the boat sideways as you get past the front of them, best thing to do is keep your foot down and pull it straight.

I've taken it to Italy twice now and am already trying to see if I can make two trips down there next year, work permitting. Weather is great, the lake is warm and calm which means I can wakeboard in my shorts. I get more use out of the boat in two weeks down there than I do in a whole summer of it being left in the River Medway!

If you think that's big, I just towed 'Scant Reward' back from Sainte Marie la Mer (about 20 miles south of Perpignan, not far from the Spanish border).

800 miles down there with the empty trailer, and another 800 miles back with the 3.5 ton load.

A rather long way all told!

The air draught (from ground to top of coach roof) is about 3.5m, which makes the whole load pretty tall, although because of the shape of the bow on a boat, they're a darned sight easier to tow than a caravan with a big flat front on them. The bow is a lot more streamlined.

We covered about 160 miles with a full tank of LPG (or GPL), which cost around 40 euros, so about 25 cents a mile, with just the trailer we were getting more like 200 miles a tank.

It's a very long way though, not sure I would want to do it again!
