Saw this ship in San Francisco bay, (on our way to Alcatraz!)
Anyone know what the huge canopy area is for? Looks like they might be able to move the length of the boat.

Wot he said, just gantries, often on ships that go into ports that don't have as many shore based facilities so they bring their own dock cranes with them.

I think that the Bay Area might just be my favourite place on this planet.

The gantry cranes have got roofs on to keep the rain out when loading bulk ore, etc. If the hatches are left open in monsoon areas, huge amounts of water can pool in the hold.

Looks like some containers nearly fell off the ship.

The roofs on the gantries will be for working with water sensitive cargo; These sort of vessels are often engaged in the paper trade.

Ore is not susceptible to water damage and any water in the hold will settle to the bilges and be pumped overboard. The safe shipping of some fine ores is dependent on the moisture content of the cargo, but that is another issue.
