Does anyone grow up wanting to be a train driver any more? Has anyone here done it? smile

The other week we had a power cut at our local station and the one of the regular trains turned up delivering electric lanterns to the platform! It was all surprisingly quaint for suburban London on a cold wet Thursday evening, and for a second I could see some of the old fashioned romance of working on the railways.

It brought to mind the old cliche of all boys growing up wanting to be a train drivers. That's probably half a century out of date now - I never really subscribed to it personally, the idea just came from my dad who grew up in the '40s and '50s - but has anyone here done it?

I was once stoked at the idea of trains but now the idea has run out of steam.

Not as nuts as the train spotters there, they seem to be a bit like Welsh rally spectators!

Edited to introduce some vaguely amusing casual racism.

Nice pics of the Ironbridge Gorge.

Not sure they're relevant, but nice nonetheless.

I remember these from when I was a kid, they used to pick coal up from the Tower colliery. I can remember the monster like growl they used to make as the deep bass of the engine reverberated along the valley.
