I have it on video somewhere (no doubt poor quality now) but am trying to find a few videos that might be online. Particularly of the Crusader display.

It was a BBC covered event, from what I can remember.
It included Ivo Nutarelli doing his solo routine with the Frecce Tricolore (so pre-Ramstein Aug 1988)
French Navy Crusader display
Lightning display
Massed Hercules fly by.
King Hussein of Jordan flying his own Tristar in as patron of RIAT (he was from 83-89)

But was that 1987? or 1986?

Definately 1987 smile

Here's a shot I took of the French Navy Crusader on 'short' finals to land.

Yes, that's how I recorded it and mentioned it in my first post smile

Raymond Baxter, a WWI flying veteran and ex-Concorde pilot John Hutchinson as well.

Good shot of the notorious castoring nosewheel there.

LOL in that case I may very well still have the video recorded from the TV

In have it on VHS.

When did the BBC last cover an airshow properly (and I won't include their useless coverage of the RAF 90 Year Royal Flypast held on the Friday of Fairford 2008 (the year the show proper was cancelled).

at a guess it would have been farnborough in the early 90s, if by properly you mean an hour on a sunday night on bbc2.

More or less - with a commentary team that knew what they were looking at and knew what they were talking about.

Despite their sometimes negative press, both Noel Edmunds and Mike Smith were fairly up to speed on aircraft and usually had a good team of proper propellor heads (John Hutchinson, Julian Tutt) to asssist them when they hosted any airshow events.

If you didn't crop the quote it would say "Raymond Baxter, a WWI flying veteran and ex-Concorde pilot John Hutchinson as well."

As in 3 different people, Raymond Baxter, a WWI pilot and John Hutchinson.

smile

The WWI pilot was talking about flying in Fe2b pusher biplanes, dropping bombs by hand and shooting those nasty Fokkers.

Hah! I missed the comma and wondered just how old Raymond Baxter was.

Taking of shooting Fokkers. There is a story about Douglas Bader making a speech at a girls school about his exploits and causing so much amusement that the headmistress found it necessary to point out to the girls that "the Focke is a type of German aeroplane".

"That's true" said Bader, "but these fellows were flying Messerschmitts".

It would be great to get some of these old vids distributed around. I have a few myself but a little later.

Would anyone be interested of sharing them ?

Would peer to peer be the best way ?

I've also had a good look around for the videos, I have found.

Fairford 1987 biggrin
Surcouf: Diving to disaster
D-Day to Berlin, complete colour film by George Stevens, Jr.

Just need to find a VCR to play them now.

Since we're on the subject of half decent presenters, wasn't William Woollard an ex. fighter pilot in the RAF? When I think of presenters like him, Baxter et al, and compare them with the cocktards we've got now (Clarkson, Hammond etc.) there really is no wonder the quality of scientific/engineering based programs has declined (if they haven't been lost for good already that is).

John Nicol does a lot of presenting, I'm sure he was involved with some of the last air shows on mainstream TV and certainly later ones on Discovery Wings.
