I joined about 15 other people on the banks of the River Stour to watch it come past...

Which very nearly was really bad timing as a London-Norwich train was slowly accelerating away from Manningtree just as Oliver Cromwell came into view!!!

But it just passed in the nick of time...

Some classic traction bringing up the rear...

Off through Manningtree Station towards London...

The one today wasn't running but last week there was one on the tracks behind my house, unfortunately it was in a cutting so I couldn't see anything but the thru-thru-thru-thru when pulling away from the signal opposite my house and the smell of the diesel fumes in the air were fantastic!!

I was on a train out of London to Chelmsford when I saw this passing through Shenfield – there were quite a few people in the car park taking photos of it over the fence. It made me quite sad when every train I saw after that was one of the bland commuter boxes we have nowadays...

Why did they call it Oliver Cromwell, who was essentially a communist thug?

The Britannia class were named after key figures in British history.

Hmm, you could say that Adolf Hitler was a key figure in British history too...

'King Charles' would have been better...

Already existed, the GWR wrapped those up on the King class.

ETA: King Charles was originally on a Star class but was removed in 1927 and re-appeared as King Charles I on a King in 1928

It's guys like that that'll stop those tours happening. Unfortunately steam tours tend to bring out the folk who just want to see a steam train and they aren't fully aware of the dangers of railways. I cringed when I saw that video.

It's on the BBC 1 o'clock news (might be local part).
