I was always of the opinion that in order to complete a ditching in the Pitts with the aircraft sitting upright in the water, the only way the achieve this would be to ditch inverted and rely on the resulting somersault around the top wing to finish upright......and no, I don't think I'd have the stones to do that either: with the result that you'd have a 100% expectation of being strapped in a water filled cockpit in an inverted airframe.
He was very, very lucky to get away with that - and amazing that he just lost the spat - although the metal gear leg on the MX seems to be a lot more sturdy than the composite items on an Extra.
