Modern journalists are not interested in getting the facts right.

Indeed, I have been accused of being a geek or a nerd here on PH for pointing such errors out.

Once upon a time knowldge of a subject was applauded.

In modern British society, knowledge is derided and those who possess it routinely insulted.

Consequently we get poorly researched, inaccurate and sub-standard reporting in the media.

Well being pedantic the RN still does have a battleship. HMS Victory is still in commission as the flagship of the Second Sea Lord. Being a first rate ship of the line she is classed as a battleship.

First Rate Ship of the Line, not a Battleship. nerd

Mary Rose is a "Great Ship" and HMS Warrior a Masted Broadside Ironclad.

Ships of the line were all battleship's. Any ship with enough guns and tonnage to form part of the line of battle was a battleship.

But that title was not used formally to describe such a ship until the late 19th Century with the 1870–1881 birth of the Battleship (the evolution from broadside ironclad to turret based guns) until the arrival of the Royal Sovereign Class Ships of 1889 and the following classes up to the Lord Nelson Class of 1905. These were called initially Battleships, but were re-named Pre-Dreadnought Battleships following the launch in 1906 of HMS Dreadnought.

The current HMS warrior is a shore station at Northwood, home to the Permanent Joint Headquarters, COMNAVFOR NORTH and CinC Fleet.

It always makes me chuckle - only the Fish-heads could have a post called CinC Fleet (Sink Fleet).

Well I've been outgeeked here. All I can add (without cheating and firing up Wikipedia) is that the RNs last battleship was HMS Vanguard, launched in 1946. And I think the USN's last ones were Iowa, Missouri and New Jersey, one of which turned into the General Belgrano and struck a torpedo.

General Belgrano was the former Brooklyn Class heavy cruiser USS Phoenix. A survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbour.

The Belgrano was formerly the USS Phoenix which was a cruiser, not a battleship. The Iowa-class battleships (4 of) were not retired until the 90s, some having seen action in the 'first' Gulf War.

IIRC they were retired and then reactivated. Partly to counter the Soviet Kirov class ships and secondly as a reaction to the Exocet hits on RN ships in the Falklands war.
