Where is the best place to watch from outside of the base? I can't afford a ticket as money is currently a little tight, so on the bike it is. I'm not quite close enough to get a residents permit but close enough that the resulting traffic usually results in not being able to leave the street all day. I was thinking either Thames Path outside Castle Eaton or I had a recommendation of Lushill. However I can't remember what the sight lines are like there so any suggestions?

When you say bike, do you mean Bicycle or Motorcycle? - I only ask, cos the Police are pretty hot on vehicles (i.e. motorcycle) stopping on the grass verges to watch the display!
Best to head down through Totterdown, pay £15, and go in the farmers field right opposite the runway.
Better view than being in the airbase itself!
If you're on a bicycle, then you can stand by the crash gate and get an equally good view- but there will be a reasonable crowd of people there!

These are the best places I know of...there are others around the Totterdown area but with restricted views due to the trees. Not sure about the other side of the base.

Pushbike. You won't even get a vehicle anywhere near unless you have a residents pass! Totterdown sounds an interesting idea, I used to watch from the Northside when I was there for free as a cadet biggrin

You can get to the farmers field no problem.

Actually that's Rhymes Barn Farm next to the crash gate. It's also worth mentioning that Rhymes Lane is closed at both ends of the road to stop people using it so if you need access to the farm you will have to move traffic cones. If police ask, say you are visiting Roger at the farm itself.

Horcott Farm / Totterdown Hill is to the NE of that, the 3 middle fields

Yeah, they put road closed boards out and cones...but you just drive round those smile
That bit of road is actually one way for the weekend...so don't come out of the field and turn right like we just did...you might meet a motorcycle plod coming the other way with blue flashing lights wink
