Jet Ski Part Ownership
Discussion
I've been thinking of getting myself a Jet Ski for a while, but the prospect of having to get a tow car and the hassle of launching the thing would probably put me off ever going to use it. But I hired one out yesterday at our local marina and the guy there was talking about one of his rival companies doing a 'part-ownership' thing that sounded pretty interesting.
I had a look at their site last night and it looks ideal, it's £99 a month and includes mooring, maintenance and insurance. Obviously the ski's are shared, but only have a maximum of 10 members per ski and are bookable in advance, each member then gets a maximum of 42 hours per month.
Anyway, just wondered if this looked luiked reasonable value for money or if I should just bite the bullet and buy my own? Has anyone here ever done anything like this?

So a new Jet Ski costs around £10k and the part ownership organiser takes about £100 PCM off 10 people.
After 10months you have paid for it in full between you and they continue to charge you £100 PCM indefinitely?
And this is an attractive deal because?
Get a couple of mates together and buy one or buy it yourself. It’ll be much cheaper in the long run.

It's certainly attractive for the organiser After 10months you have paid for it in full between you and they continue to charge you £100 PCM indefinitely?

I see what you're saying, but this thing is moored at the most expensive marina (only a few minutes from open sea) in my area which is £1400 P.A. and it'll be fully manitained and insured. I also don't have to worry about getting a car I can tow it with and having it sat at home taking up space on the drive. After 10months you have paid for it in full between you and they continue to charge you £100 PCM indefinitely?

Obvioulsy the organiser is going to make money out of it, it is a business after all. We had considered buying one, but if a few mates get together and buy one, then we have one jetski between us, doing it this way we can use 2/3 at the same time. I guess if in 12 months time we are still regularly going out then I'll look to buy one, this way I get to see what it's like and hope it's not just a passing fad.
I really just wondered if anyone had done anything like this before and if it was a complete waste of money really.

Matc - out of interest, what area is this in? Sounds very similar (price wise) to somewhere near me...
It's at salterns marina in Poole. What area are you in?
Have seen these down there and must say I have been tempted myself, purely from a lazy/cant be bothered to store/maintain/lug it around perspective.
Any linkys?

Spoke to a friend last night who also looked into this a while back - the only thing that stopped him from doing it was that no one else wanted to do it too (having negated to ask me...), though he also said everything you have about the lack of worry about maintenance, storage, and the like.
If I get time over the weekend, may well have a wander down there and see what the setup is like...
Keep us posted on your experiences of it!

Will do, off to do the training day tomorrow which is run by another company who do 'safari tours' from the same marina; I went out on one with them on Sunday and they were a good outfit. Get to meet the owners of Wavetime afterwards and they're going to show us the set-up. I'll post back tomorrow. If I get time over the weekend, may well have a wander down there and see what the setup is like...

Any update? Was with the tours people twice in the past week.
Also tempted with the timeshare scheme for the same reason as you.
Sorry, been meaning to update this! Also tempted with the timeshare scheme for the same reason as you.
All seems great so far, the ski's have got quite a bit busier which means that you need to book a couple of days in advance for the peak stuff (6-8pm weekdays), this is made more difficult because we are trying to find a time when both skis are free, there always seems to be at least one free; but other than that availability has been pretty good so far.
The guys running it seem to be very fair when it comes to any problems, but they are reliant on everyone playing by the same rules ie. ensuring they are completely full of fuel at the end of your session rather than just showing full on the readout. They are also not being too precious about any minor bumps or scrapes and have fitted reverse gear (not standard!) to them to make them easier to maneuver.
I would say for the money it costs it's well worth it, especially if you have been out twice with the tour guys in a couple of weeks, that would have covered almost 2 months worth of payments for these! The ski's are also a fair bit nicer to ride than the sea-doo's, they're lighter and seem to ride the waves a little better.
The only problem for me at the moment is getting enough free time to get out and enjoy them! If you have any questions you want answered feel free to drop me a pm.
Just thought I'd ad my 2p!
I'm a Wavetime member and have been for pretty much a year. I used to have a Yamaha GP1200 on a trailer which i loved but struggled to get the time to use it so it went a couple of years ago. Get it out the garage, get hooked up, fuel it on route, launch it... you've burnt 2 hours before you've even started!
I think wavetime suits a certain type of person and isn't for everyone...
You can book up to 3 sessions back to back in the week so 6 hours max and 2 sessions back to back on weekends so 4 hours. But to be honest I mostly book a 2 hour session which is enough to get my fix. Having done the trailer/owner option it is so so easy to use on the moored docks and even if you buy your own ski i would definitely get it in a marina. I keep my suit in the car and get on the last slot of the day after work if the suns out.
Obviously really sunny peak weekends do get busier but with 7 slots a day and 10 members (several of which don't seem to be local) I've always managed to get out even if it means going earlier or later.
The thing they don't promote but really should is that you can book slots up to 30 days in advance, so if you're a bit more organised than me then this is the way to go then you know exactly when it's yours. Most of my use has been booked out on the day!
As for costs, yes the company makes money but the easy sell for me was that the mooring in the marina alone is about £1500 and the membership is only £1200 a year. My old ski was very thirsty too and these new skis are amazingly better on fuel. My yearly service used to be around £500, insurance was £260, launch pass was £100 plus all the hassle.
The down side i suppose is that it's not actually "your" jetski, but it's better than the one i could afford before and i've used it loads more so I'm willing to be a "renter"
I think this is either a good deal for people that don;t want the hassle of the DIY option or use it as a tester before spending out on your own.

Last post is dated 11 years ago. What area is this in, I would be interested, thanks
Location given was Poole, Dorset
Company mentioned is 'Wavetime' and the link given in one of the posts doesn't go to a company.
Be best googling the company mentioned 'Wavetime' who might or might not still be in existence or searching for similar companies.

Seriously thought you dont need a tow car for a bloody jetski, just a car with a towbar...
