Heard on the news this morning that there's a load of powerboat racing at Harwich kicking off today for the weekend (http://www.thepowerfestival.co.uk).

I've never been to this before, any ideas of whether I'll be able to get decent photos from the shore (400mm lens) or if you really need to be out on a boat (good point, anyone with a boat want to invite me along?!). Also is there anything to look out for particularly that might be of interest?

I'm thinking of trundling up tomorrow, anyone fancy arranging a PH beer up there?

5 Sets of racing going on.

Marathon 6 entries all bar 1 being 100 mph boats. They start at 11.30 on Saturday and start quite a way offshore of Harwich, hang around the point back to Wallet, out to the end of the windfarm, down to Ramsgate, and return to a finish at Roughs Tower (Sealand). 124nautical miles in total.

OCR approx 12 boats. 2 half hour races starting 13.30 on Sat and Sun. Both close enough to shore for good viewing at Dovercourt.

V24 and 3B. Maybe 10 in total on an inshore course again good for viewing. 16.15 start Sat and 16.30 Start Sun.

If numbers are low for the above 2 they may be incorporated to one set of races.

Thundercats. 10.30 races starting Sat and Sun off Dovercourt beach. Goes on for quite a while as they have all sorts going on.

The main Racing Class 3C European Championship. 80mph boats approx 15 from all over europe. Starts at 15.00 Sat and Sun. Good viewing of the inshore legs from Dovercourt.

I would invite you along but I will be offshore for the Marathon acting as marshal / finish boat and we need all the room we have. You may be able to blag a ride on one of the Fairlines that are going to be there in numbers.

Halfpenny pier for close up shots of the porn of marathon boats.

Will be a good weekends racing with music festival and god knows what else going on so don't miss it!

Just off for a business meeting then over to Wallasea for a short hop to Harwich this afternoon and beer. biggrin

You won't be welcome with talk like that shoot No less than a skinful is suitable for a following day spent rocking about on a boat.

Sadly the event has been cancelled today owing to a fatality on Saturday.
