...as I was sitting there looking at this meteor shower...I had a distant, "thump-thump-thump-thump".

The sound gets closer. And closer. It's definitely a Chinook. (or was it a woob-woob-woob-woob wink)

Eventually I see the thing, flying about 100 ft off the ground not far from me! Any ideas why it was there? (Other than going to check out Munich Legends, which was half a mile away).

Was driving on the A29 just south of Billingshurst earlier this year in the dark, when I spotted an even darker sharp in the sky heading towards me. Straight away knew it had to be a helicopter and the fact that it had no lights on guessed it was military. Opened the window and immediately heard the unmistakeable sound of a Chinook biggrin

Crowborough Army Camp is not a full time camp and I guess is used as a base when the army are training on Ashdown Forest at Pippingford.

However I do know a farmer who has a field which is used for training flights where they will fly in land and fly out again. Basically use his field because it has a stream and marsh, railway line adjacent and overhead power lines crossing it!

You quite often hear the Chinooks around Crowborough late at night. The other late night helicopter is the Sussex Police one but that usually has a huge great searchlight shining when its out late at night!

We have them flying over late at night every other week or so. You can hear them coming and they are low, very low.

I would say they fly past about 1/4 mile north of the house, always follow the same route and I assumed the were on their home to Odiham. If you drew a line from say Munich Legends to Odiham, I'd bet the Chinook would take that route. That route would also take them just past Billingshurst.

We have to put up with the fly boys playing games once or twice a week, they have quite a large area to play with over southern England. They do quite often do exercises involving other military bases, they are regularly making a noise over Thorney Island.

That's appreciated wink

I live about 1/2 mile from Old Barn.

Not sure you'd want an old fart in a 535D trying to keep up with you lot though!

It must be a training route as they regularly pass over Tonbridge, north on the way out south on the way back turning over what used to be West Malling. Isn't the knickname "Wocka" due to the noise they make??
