I assume most have seen the video that's doing the rounds, with the two fellass free climbing that massive transmission aerial, well I was wondering how the aerials were built?

I know when constructing buildings that the cranes can sort of scale up the side, just wondered if it was different for aerials as they're less substantial?

No big secret. They're constructed in much the same way as towers, with a jib crawling up the mast just below the top.
Explained better here

I've seen footage on the tv of one being assembled in sections by a Sikorsky Skycrane, but have no idea how common a mehtod that is.

The closest I've been able to find any footage is of an electricity pylon being assembled.

Found the below site with more info on that tower climb, plus lots more, aparently safety was compromised. OSHA say operatives need safety after 6ft!!
