Just got back from North Korea and when I was there we saw some (and flew on one) interesting planes. Thought you guys might enjoy the photos so here they are. smile

Our plane from Bejing to Pyongyang. A Tupelov TU154.

Planes on the runway at Pyongyang airport.

At the war museum there was an underground room with some planes in it. We were rushed round very quickly so sorry about the st pics.

A Yak of some kind I believe.

There was also a room full of wrecked American planes, captured helicopters and tanks and stuff. Will put these up as well if you want.
Hope you find these interesting smile

A Mig 15.

And something else, I was told what it was but I cant remember sorry. I am sure Eric will know smile I think it was a mitsubishi but really not sure.

You're luck you were in an enlightened nation like North Korea.

Plane snapping like that will get you a stretch inside in some european countries. Greece.

Superb. Post as many pics as you've got. I find any idea of what goes on in NK to be fascinating, so go ahead!

What were you doing in NK?

I could be wrong but that looks like a Ilyushin Shturmovik.

I think that the rules were relaxed somewhat as half the worlds press were also in the airport, so we got away with these pics. I don't think that you would normally.
I was in the DPRK for a holiday to see what it was like and it was a total eye opener.

Ok so more pics, now of wrecked american stuff....

This chopper was captured by the DPRK in the 1990s.

All the other stuff was from the 1950s when the war was going on.

The place was really dimly lit so the pics aren't the best. There were tanks and all sorts in that room as well. It was very strange.
Enjoy thumbup

Hard to tell from that angle but it is a single engine fighter. I think it might be a Yak 9.

Very interesting smile What's the deal with planes missing windows?? Isn't that, like, dodgy?

Are you referring to the Tu154 open window picture?

Side windows in cockpits are usually opening to allow the pilots to look out or shout (if necessary) to ground staff.

Indeed - if you look closely at the Tu-154 shot, you'll see the edge of the window that's been slid back.

Interesting shots OP - once in a lifetime trip from the sounds of it!

Thats a relief! I thought it would be something like that but wasnt sure. Since we didn't crash I figured that it was meant to be like that.

I think Eric is correct Yak-9.

Waits for GinettaGirl for performance data. biggrin

I think the US one is an F-80 Shooting Star.

ETA - thanks for posting the pics, did you take any of the tanks ?.

Intakes don't look right for an F-80. I think it might be a battered about Grumman F9F Panther.
Neil Armstrong flew these during the Korean War.

It looks like a Yak 9 to me as well.

The US a/c in shots 4 and 5 looks suspiciously like a Douglas Skyraider.

I believe the last shot is a Grumman F9F Panther.

Edited: Eric got there first, DAMN that man is quick! biggrin

Fantasatic - love the TU-154M. A seriously rugged plane by all accounts

I'm fairly sure that I flew on one of these into and out of Bulgaria many years ago. Those Russkies may not have been too fussed about creature comforts but they knew how to build a jet engine. I've not been pushed back in my seat so hard in any other plane. Smooth too.

i might have to show my dad these pics. He was on aircraft carriers during the korean war with the RN, and he has recently revealed that a group of them were sent with heavy equipment to recover a crashed migs because "the yanks wanted to look at it close up and we were closest"......all his other stories have been repeated over an d over again, but this is a new one that he just blurted out the other day.

First aircraft I ever flew on as a child in 1975 was a Tu-154. Balkan Airways from Gatwick to Burgas, on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria.

It was all going well until I pulled what I thought was a black grape out of the salad and stuck it in my mouth. I'll spare you the details, but I've never since cared much for olives.
