Strange goings on at East Mids Airport this morning

Late this morning I was working on the mobile phone tower above Castle Donington and immediately adjacent to the airport thus giving me a cracking view of the whole runway. As I was approaching the site along the A50 I saw a plane abort a landing. I watched it go around but lost sight of it as I drove through Castle Donington but I did see another plane take off which I guess is what caused the abort.
Once I got to the site (around 11:30am) I couldn't see the runway due to a barn in the way however at least 2 planes took off whilst I was preparing to climb the tower one of which was a Ryanair flight. Once I was on the tower I had a perfect view of the airport and could see nothing out of the ordinary however I could see a plane coming into land which it did but once touched down it opened the throttle and took off immediately. This was another Ryanair flight. It went around and did exactly the same thing again so this time I watched it all the way around and it was on this third attempt that it finally decided to stay on the ground and it turned off the runway and taxied to the terminal.
As I'm not an aviation person this behaviour struck me as rather odd particulary at a large international airport in the middle of the day so I was wondering if anyone had an idea of what may have been happening.

"Circuits" are done when training new pilots. Training flight with no passengers aboard.
No different to what the little Cessnas and Pipers do at your local airfield, just a hell of a lot more expensive!*

Really?I know obviously you're not going to be cashing the cheque on the way to the airport but could they refuse you entry?
As someone has said, EMA is used for training- practice take offs and landings. Not sure what you saw the first time though.

According to the Air Traffic Controller that used to do the after dinner speeches, take-offs are free, you can do as many of those as you like, we only charge you for the landing.

Thanks chaps I thought it would be something mundane and whilst I was watching them it did occur to me that it was very similar to the one flying lesson I had where I landed and took off 3 times.
I think the first one I saw from the A50 was a genuine abort as it was still quite high in the air when it started to climb and as we've seen in the Dubai airport thread aborting landings and going around again seem to be quite regular, even I've experienced one of those.

A "Go-Around" from a final approach is an essential part of any initial pilot training and any subsequent aircraft type rating. A certain procedure has to be followed for its safe execution.
A single engine "Go-Around" would be practised on a twin engined aircraft like the B737. A Type Rating Examiner would not want to put the aircraft at unnecessary risk during such an exercise, so would natuarally initiate it at a safe height.
