GPS/Plotter and fishfinder

Having just returned to Sheltie ownership, I am looking for a couple of toys to fit to it. My main requirements are a decent fish finder/echo sounder and a GPS/plotter.

Last time I looked at boat electronics was 20+ years ago, and things have moved on a bit since then. Can anybody recommend something suitable? TIA

I really like the Garmin units. Really easy to fit and to use. Pretty intuitive to use, you don't need to read the manual, just get starting pushing buttons. I have a GPSMap 4008 in my boat with a digital sounder

The Garmin GPSMap 451s, 551s and 556s all use the same software and do the same thing. The 451s is a 4" screen, the 551s and 556s are both 5" screens (diagonal). The screen on the 556s is a very high resolution screen so it's much much sharper than the 451s and 551s but you do pay a fair bit more for it. The units come built in with g2 mapping for the whole of the UK and Ireland so you don't need to buy a chart for them.

We don't get any problems with them. They just work. If you do ever get stuck on something, their technical helpline is in their main offices in Southampton and they really know the units inside out. You don't speak to a foreign call centre! Also their returns service is very good if you did ever get a problem.
