You get into a boat and onto a ship.

That's the simplified version so there must be an official size/ tonnage
designation.

As heard on QI, the Royal Navy denote a ship as anything that floats above the water, a boat is a vessel that can be submerged (a submarine). Although they still call RIB's, RIB's.

But that would make a coracle a ship, and the little rowing boats that get hired out in the summer on the local river are rowing ships.

well in a leisure scenario, you could simply state that pleasure yachts are never ships but are boats, where as commerical vessels can be ships... so this does mean that the newest 400ft+ mega-yachts are significantly larger than many or naval commercial ships.

The Historic Ships Committee have designated a vessel below 40 tons and 40 ft in length as a boat. However, submarines and fishing vessels are always known as boats whatever their size.

However from my days in the merchant navy, I recall one definition being that a ship was capable of carrying cargo stowed in a hold below deck, whereas a boat could only carry cargo on its deck

And don't forget that a yacht is only ever called a boat, not a yacht, unless it's by someone who does not really know what they are talking about, or they are trying to impress someone. But you'd never do a boat delivery, you'd do a yacht delivery, but you'd still be delivering a boat of course. But it would not be referred to as boating (because you do that in a hired pedalo), it's referred to as yotting, but be careful of the spelling. And yotties usually wear deckies and foulies when they go for a yot on their boat, which of course may well be registered on the small ships register.

Hope this helps.

The version I heard was from a Navy chap who said, it was a boat if it tilted into a turn (like a RIB or submarine) and a ship if when turning it tilted out.

That's what a captain told me once, but he was a captain, and all captains are prone to moments of utter bullcrap!

He wouldn't have made Captain if he didn't have the skill of bullsh**ing!
