Was split on where to post this... feel free to move if need be.
Saw a trailer for a programme about this... possibly on National Geographic... have I missed it?

Just found my 8 year watching the one when the Alaskan airliner plunged into the sea off LA, watched by other airliners. Christ how awful!

What are they doing having this on at 4pm.

Still it seems to affected me more than him but maybe that is because I'm flying to the US tomorrow.

As far as i am aware, no compete conclusion has ever been drawn on the BA777 incident? Fuel icing is obviously the top suggestion, but no data can comprehensively confirm or deny that fact??

AAIB final report was issued a while back iirc??

Clashes with 'airplane repo' which i will be watching on disco. Typical yank drama. All the repo i've ever had dealings with involves sticking a note on the door of the aircraft saying 'do not move aircraft, now property of blah blah, etc etc'

The guy on the program goes on about being kidnapped for 7days LOL!!

Hi,

they think it was caused by a restriction in fuel flow which was caused by ice bulding up in the fuel system which went beyond the capability of the fuel oil heat exchanger ( FOHE). However they do emphasize that the investigations are on-going.

Boeing issued a very good Flight Crew bulletin on the subject and there is now a cold fuel supplementary procedure in place when the fuel temperature is below -10 degrees c.

It only applies to the Rolls Royce Trent 800 series engines on the B777.

Rgds.

My old chief engineeer particpated in the investigation on behalf of RR and it is strongly believed to have been icing in the FOHE matrix as per the link below.

I remember another one where the pitot tubes were left uncovered while being services, some wasps or beetles set up nest in there, and this threw the aircraft's ability to read its altitude. They changed policy after that about relying on instruments alone when they contradict each other (FAA).

The USAF had problems with ice clogging the fuel filters on their B-36s back in the 1950s so it's certainly nothing new.

enjoyed this.... well worth watching.... the conclusions above seem to be correct about icing...
