I was just looking at the "pictures from aircraft" thread, and I was wondering...

why always short sleeved shirts? I think they look a bit daft with epaulets.

That is all.

Dunno, maybe long-sleeved shirts catch on the throttle levers...?

I can't speak about the airliner world, but the Flight Deck of the C130 in summer was like a greenhouse so we tended to fly with our flying suit sleeves rolled up.

I did a sortie in the Tropics where the aircraft had been heat soaked overnight and no refrigeration trolley was available prior to start up. After T/O a pressurisation problem resulted in us not being able to climb above 8000ft for quite some considerable time so the a/c did not cool down. The only way to cope was to fly in T-Shirts, shorts, and flying boots. Even then the most one could stand was about 20 minutes on the Flight Deck before going down the back and laying on the ramp in an effort to cool down.

Oh, I've done my share of full AEA including 'Turning Trousers' and 'Goon Suits'.

And don't even talk to me about AR5 or AR5/NVG sorties!

Ok, but can we talk to you about AR5/NVG/Body Armour/Ship/Desert sorties?
Your go.

Was there not a crash years ago caused by a shirt cuff catching a switch unnoticed? IIRC it was the DC10 crash in the everglades or similar??

My lot offer long or short sleeves, 99% of the pilots opt for the short sleeve shirts.

I prefer a short sleeve because they are cooler and easier to iron. If most of my work was in colder climates I'd probably opt for a long sleeve shirt.

I think long sleeved shirts rolled up look a lot smarter, short sleeved shirts look like 'trainer shirts' when your being weaned off t-shirts hehe

The one I remember reading about (David Beaty, 'The Naked Pilot') was the crash caused by the words 'Cheer up!' being confused with 'Gear up!'...

On a similar note. Post major ground runs on a Herc with cargo bay and flight deck heating on full hot, trying to get the pressurisation figures in limits on a hot summers day!

Surely an airline pilot can afford an ironing wench?

I don't think newly appointed first officers are on big salaries

Those guys all have hostie girlfriends who do the ironing but the older ones all have ironing wenches, I certainly do anyway.

Short sleeves show off the big watches.

(I would like to point out that to counter the pilot/ watch syndrome I wear the cheapest I can find including Mickey Mouse.)
