Much against my better judgment, the Mrs is dragging me and some friends to Glyndebourne on Sunday. Five hours of Die Meistersinger - I can hardly wait. She has, however, agreed to drive...

The booze I am all sorted on - some nice champagne, a nice puligny and some kiwi pinot followed by some sauternes. What I am struggling with is the food. A few egg and cress sandwiches and some party pork pies with some M&S salads doesnt seem right somehow. So any suggestions as to posh party food? Nothing that requires too much effort, please! Thanks in advance everyone.

I remember an old gag about opera: 'The performance started promptly at 7 o'clock. Three hours later I looked at my watch and it was 7.30...'

Smoked salmon / roast beef / roast ham sandwiches, quail's eggs, strawberries and cream.

Get the best ingredients you can find and keep it simple.

You must acquire some Roquefort and/or foie gras to go with the Sauternes...

Good meat (esp. the likes of Pata Negra et al smile), good cheeses, and breads also needed for a proper picnic, IMO. Oh, and Gravad Lax might work well too?

Presentation is the key to making it all look even greater than the sum of its parts.

Thanks very much. At least the sun is shining this morning. Think of me when you are watching the Grand Prix....
