I ate lunch at a Yo Sushi today, because I wanted to:

a) sit down
b) eat something other than a sandwich
c) not go a pub stinking of chips, or be tempted by beer
d) I didn't have much time

Now, whilst YS ticked all of those boxes and it was very good....woooow it's expensive! For what you get, and you don't get much; they must have some big margins.

But, top repeat myself it was good and I'd go again, but not too soon. I can't afford it.

Any thoughts on YS, as I'm a Sushi virgin. Where else could I go for similar outside of London, preferably Manchester, Leeds or Edinburgh? Are there any alternatives.?

For Leeds look up little tokyo, a restaraunt with booze but quick enough to do on a lunch break, do takeaway also. Sashimi with rice is brilliant, 10 or 12 pieces (I think? Been a while!) for about £13 not cheap but it's bloody good.

I'll get berated for saying this but pret do a reasonable box for under a fiver, if ur in a rush! Much much better than tesco crap. Waitrose do a decent box for £7, but that puts it in little Tokyo territory for me so I don't bother.

I agree. I'm vege, so no idea on quality, but a mate paid around £15 for 3-4 pieces of tuna in London and seemed to think this was about right.

Sushi is small and not filling by our standards. Problem with almost all Japanese food here (or in the West) is that a lot of it is 'fusion' run by chain restaurants like Wagamamas or run by non-Japanese people so it's not very authentic both in decor, style or taste.

There are only two Japanese restaurants in London that I visit and consider authentic. I'm sure there are more but they are two out of dozens that I have tried.

Lol, I walked right into that one!

On a side note, I recently tried some vege sushi made by a friend and really enjoyed it. But there seems to be an immense amount of prep involved for what is almost like a starter or canape.

I've not tried that place but I will smile There's also an okonomiyaki restaurant in Leicester Square that I need to try.

I usually go to Tokyo Diner or Koya Noodles. But I don't really eat sushi or japanese curry, I like noodles smile

I wouldn't bother with sushi or sashimi in the UK unless it's fresh cut, not the st in a tray you get in the chain places in London that's been made at about 5 in the morning. Also, very hard to find eel or octopus or any of the proper stuff. Luckily I get to go to Tokyo every year for the real thing. About a 100, million times better.

It's worth a go. They cook these weird little omelette things in front of you that are quite unlike anything else. Tastewise it wasn't that special but it worth it to see all the gubbins they put on.

Ah, in my ignorance I thought that was the name of the restaurant, not the dish. Abeno was the place we went to.

Shh.. don't tell everyone...

Little Tokyo is excellent - good range, good value and a fun (if a little dated) environment.
