Mullet when caught from beaches is delicious! the river ones can taste very muddy! Good beach mullet is as good as any Bass or Bream and is great cooked with oriental flavours like ginger and lemon grass! Ive cooked it afew times over dry fennel canes placed straight onto the hot coals of a bbq!

I agree,excellent eating
They are very good eating indeed - and the reason why they aren't available commercially is that they are inshore fish and are difficult to catch in any numbers by netting.
Yes they can inhabit some rather unpleasant places - harbours, sewage outfalls and the like - but as you know the provenance of these fish you should go for them.
However, they are a very tricky fish to catch - light float tackle and bits of bread flake tend to me my favoured method in the past - but they are very finnicky feeders.
I did well by feeding balls of liquidised bread and fishing a bit of bread flake under a heavy waggler or stick float - but you need to fish quite light - which can be a problem unless it's very calm conditions.
