Afternoon all.

Looking to tap in to the extensive restaurant knowledge of the PH lot - I'm looking through the stickies but thought I'd throw a thread up as well.

I'm looking for a restaurant that is in or around the City/ Farringdon/ Liverpool St area.

The occasion is a birthday meal however I want the restaurant to be impressive, i.e be a little bit special but without being over the top & not posh. I want to look like ive thought about it without trying too hard to impress if that doesn't make me sound like a fool!

I'm considering something perhaps a little romantic/ cosy. Potential for cocktails (or perhaps go for cocktails somewhere after?)

Food wise perhaps something to share i.e. Tapas or something not overly heavy so not a steakhouse (unfortunately).

Budget: upto £30-£40 a head as a ball park.

Thoughts & recommendations?

Ps apologies for the poor grammar & structure - phone posting!

Hix Oyster & Chop House.

Very informal, with exquisite UK-sourced food. Plenty of lighter options if you don't want steak.

Thank you, I had completely forgotten about Smitalfields so am looking in to that. MC Hix looks amazing, it's definitely on the shortlist. Thank you both.

The City/ Farringdon/ Angel area isn't one I know well at all so it's good to get recommendations from people in the know.

Hix Oyster & Chop House is lovely. I've been there tonight in fact.

The three-course set menu with freshly-baked sourdough bread (still hot), water, a champagne cocktail for me, a glass of wine for Tate Modern Man, and coffee was £78.41 including service for two. A steal.

Starters: potted salmon with sourdough toast and wild garnish (fat hen); chilled golden tomato soup with basil oil.

Mains: butcher's steak salad with horseradish; grilled mackerel with spiced sweetcorn relish.

Desserts: credit crunch ice cream with hot chocolate sauce; blueberry 'fumble' (fnaar, fnaar - a cross between fool and crumble).

Service is attentive but not overbearing, and you're not made to feel like a pov because you've ordered the set menu. You're not rushed either 'because they want the table', even though the place was full.

Highly recommended. The chateaubriand on a neighbouring table was priced at 60 quid (for two), but it looked fantastic. One for next time, I think.

Tate Modern Man was well impressed - not least because I paid - but at those prices I'm going to. hehe
