Beers Loved Now Lost
Discussion
I posted a reply in the Roads forum this week where I mentioned the Three Tuns brewpub in Bishops Castle, and it sparked some memories .
When I moved to Shropshire back in 1989, I was goggle-eyed at the number of little pubs owned by breweries I'd not heard of (coming from South Wales). So I invested in a Good Beer Guide: 1989 Edition which I've still got in the bookcase behind me.
At the time, Shropshire boasted two "original" brewpubs: The Three Tuns, and The All Nations, but I'm reminded of other beers from that time that were bloody lovely yet are now lost in the mists of time.
For example:
Of all the above, I really miss Ind Coope's Burton Ale. A punchy voltage (5.2% IIRC) but very astringent with nice citrussy notes that masked the alcohol. Draught Bass may still be available, but I've not seen it for years and it's probably a shadow of its former self anyway.
I know us beer lovers are spoiled for choice these days (my local is coming to the end of its second week of its second beer festival this year), but despite all that there are still great beers that deserve remembrance.
Aren't there?

Burton Ale was absolutely lovely.
I fear that we are in an age of plenty of choice, but a lack of overall consistency/quality.
For example, our village has a brewery which produces a nice drop, but two of their three main brews are pretty awful TBH. That and a general lack of skill by landlords for keeping/serving good quality ale is compounding the problem.

As a former student in Nottingham I remember Home Ales and Shipstones ('Shippos for Hippos') - both now demised.
I thought Bass the brand was still going even though they were taken over by Coors.
I don't imagine they'll be missed. Shippos was also known as 'ststones' for a good reasonI thought Bass the brand was still going even though they were taken over by Coors.

Indeed! Though I escaped as preferred cider in those days. Wonder if 'The Yorker' is still there?Ah yes it is! http://www.bbc.co.uk/nottingham/features/2003/04/r...
Dear All,
Wadworths' Farmer's Glory - I can't recall the flavour of this but do remember drinking it whenever I saw it so I must have liked it.
King & Barnes' Chistmas Ale - bottle conditioned, long lived, multi layered, rich, seasonal stuff
Smiles Stout - strong & dark
Newcastle Star - strong, sweet, best beer I've ever found to go with curry
Watneys Red Barrel
I may have lied about the last one being loved,
regards,
Jet

Had a pint of draught Bass a few weeks ago - I thought it might have gone as hadn't seen it anywhere in years; it was just as bloody lovely as I remembered it being!!!
My most missed is Kimberly ales - travelled all the way from Suffolk to Nottingham a few years ago and was looking forward to my fave pint, only to find the pub was serving Greene King instead - oh the irony!

Forget which one it was, but there was a Vaux beer which I have very fond memories of.
Just had a look in one of my old GBG's.Vaux Double Maxim, maybe?
Another I've just remembered was this:
Back in the day, the only pub near me that served it was The Compasses in Bayston Hill (talking 1990-ish here). And it had a flavour totally unbecoming of a mild @ 3.4 volts. Dark, chocolatey, damsoney goodness. It was discontinued for a number of years in the mid-90's, then resurrected.
Don't know what it's like now.

That's the chap. A quick google suggests you can still get it - the directors who fled vaux amid it's closure started a new brewery (which I'm ashamed to say is located not 20 minutes from my door and I didn't know about it!). I'll have to investigate Vaux Double Maxim, maybe?
It seems a lot of their other brews went the same way too, though I was never their biggest fan TBH, being from the proper side of the river I always preferred the Fed brewery's offerings

Fremlins. Long time ago but iirc, clear and crisp taste. Until Whitbread bought them, then it tasted like, well, Whitbread.
Their old brewery location is now a shopping centre..http://www.fremlinwalk.co.uk/
