Anyone know where I can buy some?

(and yes, I am wondering if it would be rude to simply ask the Chip Shop if I can buy a bottle from them)

Isn't it the white vinegar from a jar of pickled onions, with added water?

If it's the brown stuff you're after, AFAIK, many fish and chip shops don't use real vinegar, instead it is a 'non-brewed' condiment. i.e acetic acid and caramel colouring, watered down in a 2:1 ratio.

Yes 'non-brewed' condiment -Morrisons do their own brand - not as good as the real thing - absorbs too easily so you need to keep splashing lots on) - but 90% there and very good value - cheap as chips! smile

I'm pretty certain that the vinegar from a jar of pickled onions will meet your requirements. Up in the grim North the fish and chips shops tend to sell huge onions in malt vinegar (brown) rather than white onions in distilled vinegar. Whatever colour you're after, your local supermarket will have both types.

Get to your local supermarket and buy yourself a 1 litre jar of Sarsons Pickling Vinegar. It's spiced ready for pickling onions or red cabbage or whatever and is perfect in every way on chips, or fish and ain't half bad at shifting limescale around taps etc, (but plain white vinegar is cheaper for that).

Get thee hence to Waitrose.

Naah! I think you're all (albeit helpfully) missing the point.

Onion vinegar is a particular condiment at chippies whereby you have the choice of flavouring your chips with 'normal' vinegar, or 'onion' vinegar.

Maybe it's a Southern thing. Bloody lovely either way.

OP - maybe you should ask your local chippy where they get theirs? (Bear in mind you may have to buy another house to store it in.) wink

the onion vinegar in most chip shops is basically the vinegar left behind after their jar of pickled onions has emptied. Easy to do the same at home

In a nutshell yep, however you can buy commercial onion vinegar from most chippies. I have a bottle here in front of me by a company called Drivers - its labelled as Onion Flavoured Non Brewed Condiment. No company website on the bottle unfortunately however the ingredients list as:

Water
Acetic Acid (4.5%)
Flavouring (Onion Extract)

Why not do your own, slice large onion and put it in an airtight tub and cover with malt vinegar leave in fridge for 3days.
Onions makes a perfect cheese and onion sandwich whilst the vinegar will flavour your chips perfectly.
