Afternoon Gents (and Ladies),

My better half has suggested that she would like a Nespresso machine in the house. Now I don't drink coffee so my knowledge is very limited.
The one thing I know is it needs one of those pipes for frothing (forgive me).

Does anyone have any suggestions?

(Mods, sorry Couldn't figure out where to put this so thought I would start here)

Personally i have always been a firm believer in the fact that decent coffee means grinding your own beans (that isnt a euphemism).

Is the nespresso thing one of those that you need to buy those blister packed coffee shots for ?. If so IMHO avoid.

I would either buy a decent machine with its own built in grinder, or get a smaller machine rated for good pressure, and as you say a steamer attachment for the milk, and add a small hand turned grinder.

Keep any coffee beans you have bought fresh and arent going to use soon ish, in a sealed tub in the freezer, it helps keep them fresh and of course they can then be ground from frozen.

All just my opinion on the matter though. smile

I believe Amazon are doing a good price on Bean to Cup machines at the moment. Don't know the quality of it, but bean to cup = the answer to all your coffee desires.

Otherwise, I've got a Tassimo machine - they are good

love our nespresso- as does the missus.

we have a stovetop, and a gaggia too, but the nespresso gets used mutliple times per day- its very quick, very very easy, no mess, and produces really very good coffee- the crema is most surprising....

we bought one with the frothing bit, and that works far far better than expected- its not as good as real frothed milk, but for the speed and convenience its way way easier!

I have one of these, and I must say it is excellent:

http://www.nespresso.com/uk/en/product/citiz-coffe...

The cylinder shaped thing on the side froths the milk, if that's your bag. The machine itself makes excellent espresso and lungo coffee.

Nespresso also has one of the best customer services I have ever encountered. When there was a small fault with my machine they came to collect it, and left me with a loan machine. They have also given me free descaling packs in the past. The last time I ordered coffee they accidentally delivered £60 worth of coffee to my old work address. I phoned them, and they immediately dispatched it again to my correct address, and told me I was welcome to keep the other order if I was able to get hold of it.

P.S. I do not work for Nespresso!

That amazon link is the very machine i use (albeit an older version) its a lazy mans solution, but it does a very very good job. Thats also a very good price - I paid nearly double that for mine about four years ago.

Had a Nespresso for approx 10years really like it. The bit that sold it to me was the ability to have a weak coffee for the wife and straight after a strong one for me.
The capsules are about 25-30p each.

we have a Nespresso at work and it is quick and easy - for the capsules, it works out at around 28 per cup. only practical tip is get a machine that does a cup with one press of the button.

Our cheapish nespresso machine you have to press once to start the process and press it again to stop it which can be a pain in the rear if you need to do several cups whilst trying to talk to a client.

Also the coffee is hot but not boiling hot which suits me just fine.

I have (well, I bought one for Mrs Plgrim) the magimix version with the milk attachment thing. I quite like it, however:
Pros - easy to use, not messy, nice range of coffees, and can have hot and/or frothy milk to boot.
Cons - dependant on the pods staying in production, your 'range' of coffees is decided for you, and the machines aren't cheap. Also, you need a minimum order of pods, but on balance, It's pretty good.

I still fancy one of those stove-top things though - didn't michael caine have one in the ipcress file?

Have had a Nespresso machine for many years, think it's one of the early ones, I find it great for the mornings, it's on a timer so the water is ready, and I have a drink in seconds from putting the pod in.

I would agree with the comment about getting one that does the water in measures of cup size, means you get the same each time. The pods are easy to get online, and it works out cheaper than coffee shops.

the one we have has 2 buttons, for 2 sizes of cup, although both are small-ish, but it's not a mug of maxwell house, I supppose

On the magimix version you can calibrate the amount that each of the 2 buttons dispenses. From memory, put the capsule in, press and hold the button, and release when cup is full to desired level. The next time you press the button you'll get the same amount.

I have the same machine and love it, got it a couple of weeks back to replace my 5 year old Nespresso machine and the milk frother jug is brilliant. The old one had an arm which worked really well but this is much easier and produces a decent result every time.

Yep have the same machine myself.. The frother jug is great and much easier to use (and keep clean) than a jug and steam pipe.

One of the ground rules for picking a pod coffee machine is not to get one that makes anything other than coffee - unless you want to spend ages cleaning it. The separate frother on this nespresso makes damn fine hot choclate without using the main pod.

It has the advantge over the nespresso's with the separate frothers that the frother has the same 3 year warranty as the main machine - other machines with separate frothers only get a 1 year warranty on them.

Nespresso customer service is flawless so far.....

We've got this one with the Aerocinno and it's brilliant! http://www.homeandcook.co.uk/krups-nespresso-essen... Use it every day, no mess, no fuss, decent coffee, and decent hot frothed milk for cappucino. It's worth hanging on a while before ordering though, Nespresso do a promotion a couple of times a year where you can £40 worth of pods when you buy a new machine. It's been a while since the last so it's probably due on again next month.

We have a Nespresso Citiz (Magimix) and the Nespresso Aeroccino as a separate unit. It gets daily use. The beauty of the system is that it gives decent enough coffee, quickly, simply snd with virtually no cleaning, setup (tap a button and it heats up) and the Aeroccino froths and/or heats milk. It's also consistent.

At stupid o'clock when we leave the house it works for us. We like the choice of coffees and the limited editions, and the customer service is good.

It may not be the best coffee, but you know what? I prefer the sound of vinyl, but I listen to MP3s. Regrettably these things have to fit in with your life - Nespresso does that.

Takes a little more effort obviously but still only 5-10 mins or so. This thread gave me a craving so I popped out to the kitchen... Just add choc sprinkles for good measure...

it may not be the very best, but its pretty bloody good!

certainly way better than 99% of the coffeee you get in most chain coffee shops (costa seems dreadful at the moment in particular), and with good variety.

I'm sure i could do better if i could grind, and make coffee using proper kit, but the time/money/effot just isn't worth it.

£200, proper, tasty coffee, no fuss, no mess, job done.

That's a very good way of looking at it. I have a Gaggia Classic over in France and it does make better coffee, but not by enough for me to go through all the hassle of cleaning it, filling it with water and grinding the coffee every morning before I go to work. When I'm on holiday it's a different matter, and occasionally at the weekends I do miss being able to go out and buy some freshly roasted beans to craft a perfect espresso but 99% of the time convenience wins given that the trade off is so tiny in quality.
