Up in Manchester for a few nights next week. Already have a good curry place to go to but where in the city centre would you suggest for a really decent meal?

will be a group of us, anything but curry as we have one of those sorted so something with a bit of variety would be good, budget not an issue as long as its good.

My experiences in Manchester are fairly limited but friends went to Rosso recently and seemed to like it:

I think it has something to do with a footballer so that might taint the food for some ball enthusiasts if they aren't fans.

I keep meaning to give Abode a try:

Grill on the Alley was OK when I visited, not exceptional but not disappointing other than some of the customers being drunken knobbers:

I've also had nice meals at the Mint hotel and Malmaison in the past, Red Chilli was interesting (although there are so many other Chinese options I'm sure you can do better) and most of the generic chains seem to do a decent enough job of things. Now I think about it I don't recall having anything too crappy to eat in Manchester as yet.

Michael Caines at Abode as previously mentioned is pretty good.

Choice in Castlefield is also very nice, opposite Dukes 92 which is a lively place for a few beers and the food here in both the attatched restaurants the Dukes Grill and Alberts Shed is pretty good, burgers in the grill are excellent.

Wings for chinese

The Aumbry in Prestwich is excellent but out of the town centre.

Cafe Instanbul for great turkish kebabs

Austalasia is worth a look.

Just steer clear of Peter Street which is where all the piss heads gather.

The Market Restaurant in the Northern Quarter is really a good English restaurant.
They just use ingredients source within 30 miles of Manchester.

Croma is great for quick reasonably priced italian. Like Pizza Express but cheaper and much better quality ingredients.

Can't think of anywhere I'd particularly avoid.
