I have a large pot of marmalade to get rid of. It is well past its best before date - but I need to keep the pot.

Stick in in the bin loose or pour it down the sink?

I am thinking sink because at leats it will be diluted, whereas in the bin it may well attract insect.

Carrier bags and the bin. . You may well block the sink otherwise.

Stick it in another container and in the bin. Milk carton or similar would work. Or empty fabric conditioner bottle (the Comfort ones have a very wide neck)

Stick it in the bin before collection day. No insects.

Mix it up with warm water and flush perhaps?

Or bake a marmalade cake. A large one.

Thanks

We also have 4 pots of honey - only one of them is opened and 2 of them are also out of date (bearing in mind honey usually has best before dates of well over a year!)

Does your house have a toilet? I know that some modern houses have these facilities, and that they can be used for just such a purpose.

Eat it, likely they will taste grand if you have not opened them yet.

I would, and have.

I confess this does rather summarise my own thoughts! How far from reality we've come.

I am sure I could have managed, just wanted to see if there was a better way but it seems opinion is split on the bin or the drainage.

Not really sure that honey actually has an expiry date.

I know some EU legislation will say it has to have one - but an unopened jar of honey, in theory, should last indefinitely.

(If you really want to know) foods do have to have a use by or best before, but its actually upto the manufacturer how long they want the date to last for - so not one to blame on the EU, IMO.

Honey does generally have very long dates on it - its just for some reason we have obviously bought some and not opened it for years.

Honey gets better with age. It's only sugar (high sugar concentrations kill microorganisms by osmotic pressure) and will gradually crystallise and get stiffer. Eat it smile

honey in a closed jar will last for CENTURIES, it won't go out of date

My point is that the EU legislate that a date has to be applied - even if the date is decided on by the manufacturer.

However, honey can last centuries without spoiling, due to the high natural sugar content.

If you have honey in a sealed jar, there's no reason to apply any kind of best before date to it.

Honey is irrelevant, the poor soul has marmalade not honey.

OP, make up a new label saying "alcoholic marmalade" and ask your OH to try it.

Sorry!
Not just honey though, 4 jars of honey.

Maybe he wants to empty the marmalade jar so that he can consolidate the 4 jars of honey into a single manageable jar?
