The C-word time of year is nearly upon us, so sorry for bringing it up.

Anyway. We used to have a £5/ person limit on christmas presents. But this year "we" (my sister) decided to do a Secret Santa thing, only buy 1 present for one person with a £25 limit. I'd drawn mum. She likes a nice whiskey, so my question is, what whiskey do I buy my mum for Christmas for £25? I could go a little over budget because she has had a really crap few months, but keep it within the spirit of the rules.

Many thanks.

It's rather like saying "which shoes". Does she walk long distances, does she like 4" heels, does she have a pathological hatred for brown leather?

Oh, and whisky or whiskey?

Essentially... what does she usually drink? From that one can usually extrapolate to something a little different but not too much.

Great Idea! Have a look in the show us your whisky thread some good stuff in there .
or visit http://www.masterofmalt.com/ great company used regularly by me .
for a bargain try a Balvenie signature 12 year old on offer in sainsburys at the moment.
If you really want whiskey go for JD single Barrel about £40 but worth the extra

I forgot about the speeling police...

She normally drinks the usual blends, but does appreciate a good single malt. I am a Luddite in this department so need much guidance.

Whisky refers to Scotch whisky; Whiskey to Irish. (American can be either...)

If she usually drinks the common-or-garden blends I'd steer clear of the more 'challenging' types such as Laphroaig, Caol Ila etc. Dalwhinnie, Highland Park, Old Pulteney should go down perfectly well though.

Redbreast, Connemara, Highland Park, Dalwhinne, Auchentoshan, Glenfiddich - all perfectly palettable.
Balvenie Signature is another often recommended, but I've yet to try it.
The HP & Dal were recommended by Lefty in the main whisky thread running, and he was spot on - so I've no doubt when I get round to the Balvenie Sig, it'll be very enjoyable too.

I bought a bottle of Talisker from a leading supermarket for a sniff over £25. I checked the prices on the interweb and it was the cheapest. Win win.

A report on the taste will follow after chrimbo

Talisker is lovely, go with that.

Otherwise find a local Budgens and get yourself a bottle of Laphroaig for £23, which really is a bargain.

Lots of good offers in supermarkets at the moment, best time to buy whisky is a few weeks before Xmas, think the offers get worse later on. smile

The thing with laphroig is that it really is the most extreme tasting whisky and therefore not to everyone's palate. I would only buy it for someone that I knew liked Islay whiskies.

The Talisker was a good shout; sure the mum will be happy.

My current favourite at normal prices is the Balvenie Signature. Just amazing amount of taste for the price.

Perhaps but I think Talisker is fairly intense in it's own way as well. And OP did say it's for someone who likes whisky, not just a random person with no experience.

I'm yet to find anyone who really enjoys whisky who doesn;t end up loving Laphroaig eventually, not always straight away admittedly. smile

I agree about the smokiness of Laphroiag, it would not be to everyone's taste. I enjoy most types of Whisky but I consider Laphroaig a winter whisky. A glass is nice after a brisk winter's walk, warming in front of a crackling log fire but not something I'd chose all year round.

Off on a tangent- For "extreme" whisky you want a bottle of Octomore. Phenol content of 140 ppm!
