Problem is I can find lots of different thermometers ranging from about 99p up to frankly insane money, and I've no idea how to figure out which one to go for.

I have one of these

http://www.amazon.co.uk/eKitch-digital-probe-therm...

some people have said that they arent very accurate but I have tested it and its accurate and it works very well for me. I got one for my mum as well and that is also accurate. so 100% success rate so far.

The problem with these is that you put a cool probe into a hot medium with poor thermal conductivity and the probe cools a margin in contact with itself. This leads to a false reading. To avoid this make several measurements and take the final reading when successive tries result in the least variation. We have an oven with a probe that goes in to the meat at the start and turns the oven off when the core temperature reaches a set point. It's British (Creda) and twenty five years old - can't get them any more sadly.

Might not be able to get that particular oven, but there are plenty of modern ones that have that feature.

I dont think thats a problem with this one though. you put the probe in at the start of cooking and the cable is enclosed in a metal sheith which is oven proof so you just leave it in all through cooking with the cable running out the side of the oven door. the probe heats up at the same time as the meat and an alarm sounds when it reaches your desired set temperature.

I've asked around and been told there are none, or virtually none. If you know of any please let me know as I might be moving house next year and would love another like the trusty old Creda.

How about....

Electrolux, AEG, GE, Miele all do them... there'll be more, I'm sure.

Have a patronising Miele video to get you going smilehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kRDm_HTDto
