We don't often need to deep fry stuff, but the occasional plate of "proper" chips would be nice and the ability to knock out some tempura from time to time would be handy too.

Any suggestions? I've had a bit of a google, they seem cheap as (pardon the pun) chips, does it really matter what I get for occasional use?

Dont mind spending more if there's a good reason for it. I've previously just used a great big pan of hot oil on the hob but now we've gone gas I suppose that's a fire waiting to happen and the thought of a spillage (on to someone) makes me go wobbly at the knees.

I got an ActiFry at Christmas - makes good, proper chips with only a spoon of oil so no mess. You can fry other stuff in it too.

I use something like this at home.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Breville-VDF059-Stainless-...

Does the job, ie. it frys stuff and it's cheap to replace if it goes wrong.

we had the same thoughts and went for currys' own for 19.99. it's fantastic for the money, but i'm sure filtration could be a bit better on more expensive models. it's in the utility room/ outhouse so not a problem for us.

I have an actifry, if it broke tomorrow I would replace it within the hour, superb bit of kit.

It is worth it just for the lack of smell.

Incidentally, if you use oven chips and NO oil, you can have good chips at less than 5% OFF

I have had mine two years and we love chips made in it plus a variety of other healthily fried foods, cannot recommend it highly enough.
