So, we had a very lazy day today which mainly consisted of a late lunch. Didnt feel like a proper dinner but decided on a snack of boiled egg and soldiers when we got peckish. Now, I haven't had this meal for years, probably since my childhood truth be told. Very nice it was too - but, I'm convinced I was always given buttered bread as soldiers to dip when I was a kid. However, my wife says that soldiers should be toasted. Have I missed out on something all these years? Have my parents let me down?

So do you definitely toast, or should soldiers just be bread and butter?

Toasted. Try a thin spread of marmalade ... perfect!

Fair enough, I'll give toast a go next time.

This is a 100% bread dependent question. If it's good freshly baked bread like this wot the Mrs cooked me this mornin:

Why would you toast?

Well.
In that case, and you know I am not being critical................

that bread / toast needs a little more fire / toasting !
See you'd be surprised how many people say that (wrongly).

Toasted. You need some stiffness and texture to compliment the egg and to not go floppy when you dunk it. Fresh bread won't meet this criteria.

Fresh bread soldiers will be floppy, apart from the two that have a crust on three sides. Fresh bread does not have the crunchy texture that toasted bread has.

Traditionally toast, every time.

But...

A little part of me likes when you put a warm boiled egg in a slice of well buttered bread, and the warmth makes the butter melt into the bread, and the soft bread takes a little of the yolk in as well.

This makes me want a slice of bread and a slice of toast each cut into soldiers next time.
