Fryer Oil Change Frequency

How often do you guys change the oil in your fryers? I picked one up this week, mainly to make chips in as I am trying to cook more at home instead of getting takeaways. This way I get to use better quality ingredients and drain the chips properly. Using sunflower oil but not entirely sure how many times it is safe to use before it should be changed.

We don't fry much but with chips you will get an aftertaste that is bitter.

Not sure on how often but you are meant to change the oil as you get trans fats from repeated heating of the oils (if the slightly st lipids lectures from this term are to be believed), which are rather bad for you.
