I'm not sure the words Tesco and Finest should ever be used in the same sentence.

I hate the place, mainly due to their aggressive planning approach but don't feel like I miss out by boycotting them.

Don't try their boned and rolled leg of lamb then. Had one the other week and if I did not know
any better could of sworn it was beef that was on my plate. Disgusting to say the least.

I find decent pork belly quite difficult to get hold of. Best I've had was from The Ginger Pig at Borough Market.

Supermarket offerings (incl. Waitrose) are nearly always too 'wet'.

Indeed.

Supermarket belly really needs 24 hours uncovered in the fridge in my opinion.

Find a butcher! The are all over the place and even a mediocre butcher tends to be better than the best supermarket for meat in my experience. (and often far cheaper too!)

Marks does a pre-packed fresh cut of pork belly which is very good and cheap!

As mentioned though, butchers is the way to go.

I have no idea about your supplier on Borough Market, but I agree that supermarket belly pork is not up to much, for the West Yorkshire based PHers try Haigh's Farm Shop at Mirfield ... a veritable mecca for nice well kept flavoursome meat

Don't preach to me. I regularly buy meat from my butcher or local farm shop.

Agreed.

GP farm all their own meat so they can track it right the way through to the counter.

field to table traceability is nothing new, nor is it unique to small producers, iirc it;sa legal requirement and has been for several years

In general butchers are better but I can remember feeling disappointed with poor quality produce from them too.

It's having the ability to see for yourself what is good on the counter or in a packet and adjusting your menu to suit that counts.

I'm counting down the days until I have a garage, and then a chest freezer. From then on I intend to buy and butcher my own (1/2 lamb, 1/4 beef, 1/2 pig and when in season a Roe deer). Looking into it, its significantly cheaper, the meat is totally traceable and will yield a lot more.
