right, had a bash at making some doughnuts earlier, what a balls up!

there was something not quite right, even though they were cooked properly, and left a horrible almost burnt taste afterwards, adding more sugar and salt did not help frown

they were shallow fried, and the oil was nice and hot, using vegetable oil!

the measures i used were

Plain flour 230g
milk 1/4pint
1 egg
30g of sugar
2 tablespoons of bircarb
and 1 teaspoon of salt
25g of butter

what if anything have i done wrong!

My preference for frying doughnuts or anything battered/crumbed is rapeseed oil. I also found that using an oil thermometer to help maintain an even temperature makes a big difference to the end product. My experience is that cheap vegetable oil can leave an acrid taste if it gets too hot.

You're also missing mashed potatoes... Honestly! It's what Krispy Kreme use in theirs to add to the texture... Recipe here
