I remember a curry meant one of these



Chinese was one of these



and I remember my gran thinking she was exotic with her Spag Bol that had carrots and celery in it and cheddar cheese instead of Parmesan

What horror foods do you remember from your childhood?

LOL - I was trying to describe these exact products to a couple of colleagues just last week.

Trying to explain how the vesta chow mein was the original chinese food in the UK.

Used to love cooking them up, the cripsy deep fry noodles in the chow mein were lovely!

I was always fed really well as a kid, all home made food and my mum is / was a terrific cook.

But for some reason our house went 100% scummy on a Saturday evening.

My Saturday evening meal would be one of the following:


A boiled northern style loop of Black pudding....nothing else

A Pot noodle or Pot rice

A pack of Findus Crispy Pancakes

A vesta curry or Chow Mein

A packet of instant savoury rice...on it's own

The rest of the week was stews, fish, spag bol, shephards pie, roasts Normandie Pork etc etc, excellent food. But for some reason Saturday was Chav-a-la-carte. I have no idea why.

They're still available, but most pubs stopped using them as they are a really efficient way of clubbing someone to the floor whilst not breaking the glass...

I remember when prawn cocktail was considered wildly exotic.

Even more so if served in a halved avocado.

My parents even had the special dishes in which to serve avocado, and I've still got them.

yes ham and cheese - yuk! but the rest of it is a dream on a plate.
