So the other day the GFs mother made a stirfy for us. It seemed a bit odd, and not anything like a stirfy.

The reason why? She baked it in the oven. Curry also gets made this way.

Any other examples of completely bizarre way people cook things, and pass it off as something else?

I did hear a story as recounted by my brother that some students, after slaking their thirst at the Union bar, attempted to make instant mashed potatoes using an electric toaster. Whilst I cannot confirm the veracity of the story, apparently they set tripped the power out in the building and set the fire alarms off. Twice.

At boarding school in the middle nowhere up in Scotland, the only cooking facilities we had in our senior common room were a toaster and a Breville sandwich toaster (the sort that makes triangular toasties).

The toaster was only really used for normal toast. Someone did try fish fingers once, which was a bit of a disaster.

The Breville was rather good at making triangular fried eggs (only using small eggs, because anything bigger would spill over!). It was also used for cooking brown trout, which we caught in the nearby loch. Sounds weird but from memory it's possibly the tastiest fish I've had in my life!

One day I had a sudden urge to eat some callaloo. It's a type of spinach I guess. I've had it a million times but never seen it cooked. It just turns up on the side of whatever meal I'm given.

So the missus comes home from work and I've got a full pot filled to the brim with boiling water and lots of chopped up callaloo floating at the top. I now know you steam it. She didn't have to take pictures and show it to everyone. frown

My mate puts sliced up pickled onions into meals like chili con carne in place of normal fresh onions. He doesn't see anything wrong with this.

My Dad got in from the pub one night and decided to make cheese on toast by turning the toaster on its side and loading the bread/cheese.

Mum wasn't best pleased when the smoke alarms all went off at midnight! hehe

Another time a group of us went back to a mates house after a heavy night in the pub and decided to raid the kitchen, said mate found some waffles in the freezer and chucked them in the toaster.
Not long after this flames appeared and he disappeared outisde holding the toaster, never one to be deterred he reappeared a few seconds later eating the waffle. biggrin

When my parents first got a microwave, my dad looked on it as just a "fast oven" and tried to cook all sorts of stuff in it with disastrous, but amusing results. It actually took him far too long to start using it properly, the stupid old goat.

I've used pickled silver skin cocktail onions to great effect in a coq au vin.

When MIcrowaves were still a novelty in the mid/late 80s - someone at school proudly proclaiming that they had just got a microwave and were going to cook the Christmas turkey in it - never did hear how it turned out.

My dad insists on boiling beef mince when making spagbol. He says he's tenderizing it. *rolleyes
I tell him every time that it's wrong and there's no need to boil it, but he still does it.

I used to have a friend whose dad would cook a nice meal, and then blend it.

Every single meal.

i.e. Roast beef, veg, Yorkshire puddings and gravy... all in a blender.

Absolutely bizarre.

What does it taste like? Boiled mince sounds grim.

Ehmm, aren't they all things that can be, eh, grilled, though?
