Home Brew - Spirits
Discussion
So having previously made a variety of fruit flavoured spirits based on one or two fruits, I've recently been given two proper rumtoft jars.
But I prefer vodka, so in with some sugar the first one is now filled with
Kiwi,
pineapple,
mango,
asian pears,
peaches,
nectarines,
strawberries,
apple.
All I have to do now is wait a year..
The second one will be filled with dark fruit.

I made some skittle vodka once.
turned out I didnt add enough skittles even though I thought I put loads in, still turned out pretty ok and green with green skittles.
might have to get a bigger bottle to do it again.
top tip, drink a couple of swigs of vodka to allow room for the skittles an shake every so often.
and after you have put enough skittles in so the have fully saturated the vodka and wont disolve, you will need to filter the vodka, I used coffee filters, although next time I might use something else as they clogged up after a while.

5 big bags of skittles to two 70cl bottles of vodka. red/orange/purple together and green/yellow together. The red is by far the nicer of the two so I don't bother with the green/yellow, they go in a bowl on the table for my housemate to eat. Skittles in the blender before you add them to the vodka and they dissolve far quicker (as you say, with a good shake every few hours).turned out I didnt add enough skittles even though I thought I put loads in, still turned out pretty ok and green with green skittles.

Blending bought spirits with fruit is one thing but isn't distilling your own spirits illegal, and probably quite dangerous?
Nope IIRC. There's been a thread about it before and I think Balmoral Green does it.We've got a glut of blackcurrants so I started some creme de cassis last week.

My understanding is that it is illegal without a licence, and that a licence is not a practical option for personal use.
Probability of being caught, if you don't poison yourself or anyone else, burn your house down or try to sell it?
Pretty much.Probability of being caught, if you don't poison yourself or anyone else, burn your house down or try to sell it?
Home distilling kits are about as dangerous as boiling a kettle (that doesn't quite get to boiling!)
They are legal to use for purifying water or producing aromatherapy s
te hence the gear is legal. It is also legal to distill alcohol to produce up to 2500 litres of biofuel per year however if you 'forget' to put it in your car it then is illegal. A bit.btsidi said:
With a Rumtopf IIRC the idea was 1 bottle of rum, a kilo of sugar and the seasonal fruit to be added every month, and then all drunk at Christmas before falling asleep
I've modified it a little.
I've added the fruit as it has come into season, plus sugar, plus some extra 'vodka' each time to keep it all covered.
As the jar is now full, all I have to do is wait.

.. I have several of these on the go at the moment. Blueberry and apple is lovely as is the orange and lemon.
I have a new one planned for soon to be ready Xmas next year and that will be Pomegranate syrup and quince. The pom is very strupy (hence no need for sugar) and the quince nice and 'dry'. Shall be an interesting mix methinks.
