Hey guys, ive just realised its so cheap to buy already frozen chicken (i get the one with no added water). My question is, can i cook it and then refreeze again?

Like say i bought a huge huge joint already frozen because it was cheap, i then cooked it in one go, sliced it up and then froze it, then i could use a few slices a day for some nice sandwhiches rather than having to eat the full thing in a few days?

No reason why not, provided you cook it properly.

Not realy,I wouldn't advise it,though I have done it with beef and ham,but not chicken.

Nonsense. If the chicken is raw, then frozen, it is perfectly fine to thaw it, cook it, and refreeze it.

whats the most efficient way to get the most chicken for the cheapest price? i bought a 700g chicken breasts bag for £3.50 and then a 1KG bag of drumsticks and thighs with bones for £1.50. For the amount of meat i would get which would work out cheaper do you think?

Thighs and drumsticks are cheaper per pound and, arguably, much tastier. But require a bit more prep for use in things like stir fries etc.

i think for thighs and drumsticks i would just eat them as they are cooked.

By the way, frozen chicken that you buy it never says to defrost just to cook straight away. Would it hurt to defrost first and then cook or would it not last long that way?

Cheap frozen chicken. Can't think of much worse.

Also can't think of anything worse than being a chicken bred to produce this kind of meat.

I have a firm belief in respect for the animals we eat - cheap frozen chicken isn't going to be RSPCA approved.

Agreed, definitely worth buying from a farm shop or at least some of the better stuff in the supermarket.

But sadly, cheap frozen chicken usually comes from countries where there are no stipulated welfare standards for animals being bred for food. Confined to a cage with no room to turn around or even sit in some cases - and paddling in your own excrement. Not nice, and by buying such products you're supporting these 'farmers'.

I'm a Butcher, and no to the chicken, but your choice.

I'm a chef, and the only person I've poisoned was a health inspector and they don't count.

I have a friend who owns a chicken farm in Ghana that is probably representative of the above. Several massive barns each of which is rotated to a separate stage of the growth process... But he has an R8 so he's alright wink

Joking aside it's pretty gross and fresh breasts are always better.

Ooh this is like top trumps!

I'm 26 and haven't managed to die or get food poisoning yet and I often cook and refreeze chicken.

For sandwiches buy a whole fresh chicken, roast it, let it go cold then pick all the meat from the carcass and freeze in an airtight box. 3 chickens from the co-op will give you over 3 kilos of meat for £10.

Just not a good idea, that's all.

At the end of the day your choice.

You've said that three times but given no reason. What is the risk in freezing cooked chicken?
