Call customers "Guests".

I am not an effing Guest I am a Paying Customer.

If you want to call me a Guest give me the meal for free.

It's the same reason why hotels and b&bs use the term 'guest' and not 'customer'

You'd rather they called you a cover?

Because they still have the right to sling you out on your arse if you get mouthy/drunk so you are a "guest" as they are allowing you the privilege of sitting in their restaurant as long as you behave.

I'm a customer when I go to Sainsbury's.

When I go to someone's premises with the intention of being provided with good food, drink and service, I'm happy to be considered a guest.

Hence why most restauranteurs would consider that they work in the hospitality trade rather than retail.

Umm, they probably call you that because it's part of the definition of the word "Guest"

Massive thread diversion, but this reminds me of something on the '419 eater' website.

It's a site dedicated to stringing along Nigerian scammers for fun - making them think you're gonna eventually send them money, but actually you're winding them up. I suggest you Google it, it's hours of fun reading.

One of the baiters was stringing a bloke along in Nigeria lovely, and sent him a form for him to fill in, ostensibly blagging it that once he'd filled in the form and emailed it back, then he'd get a load of money wired to him via Western Union.

One of the questions that was on the form was 'why do birds suddenly appear every time you are near?' And the Nigerian scammer, even then, didn't realise he was being strung along - and faithfully answered the question with 'don't know...' biggrin
