Taylors port

so, I ordered a bottle of shnapps off amazon the other day, and it came today, but it also came with a bottle of taylors port, vintage 2006, think they must have messed up the order as It doesnt show up on the amazon order page an no other money has come out of my account.

so, is this a good port or not? an is there anything I can do with it other than drink it straight?

Any free port is good port.
A slug of it in a beef/game casserole instead of red wine is always nice.

It's an alright cheap port. Mix with brandy if you have a cold and you'll feel better.

Drink it straight like wine. I'd say Taylor's was okay, but then I'm no port connisseur.

Someone will probably be along in a minute to say its comparable to Carling WKD Blue over real ale.

I think I've had Taylors before and thought it was fine. I was in Portugal a few weeks ago, and thought that was a good place to get some decent port. However, the bottle we got from the supermarket (20Eu was the most expensive we could find) was - horrible. Which put me off trying anything more expensive - the port shops had some more expensive stuff, but at tourist prices - a VERY big mark-up on stuff you could buy in the UK.

Considering the earlier comment about it being an OK cheap port - what do people recommend as a good non-cheap (i.e. up to £100) port?

You can get some decent drinking vintage bottles for around £30.

What exactly does it say on the bottle? (I didn't think Taylor's, or indeed anyone else, declared 2006 as a vintage bottling?)

In terms of decent ports up to £100 - best bet is to have a chat with your local merchant to see what he has available from 1985 or earlier. In case quantities there's usually decent choice from the brokers, but for single bottles you're more limited by what's actually available.

BTW, not understanding the comments about Taylor's being low end. Their vintage ports are up there with the best of them, especially if you're lucky enough to find some Vargellas Vinha Velha.

Warres is good, and I'm quite partial to Churchills too.

Taylors is OK - assuming you like port.
