Using the flat edge of the knife to 'crack' some garlic to peel and this happens:

Was not expecting this clean break through a supposed one piece metal knife, was very close to my wrist as left hand on blade controlling that pressure (not that there is much to crack garlic) and right hand on handle. One moment cracking garlic and next thing snapped knife, quickly swapped over to mallet and tried not the think how close that was to my wrist when snapping.

Knife is only 12-18 months old...

I think from now on I will use the meat mallet to crack the garlic as that shouldnt break on me.

(Yes knife is dirty as took pics rather than cleaned it straight away)

Looks like a hair crack caused the blade to snap, if you look at the cross section of the knife that little square darker grey area on the thick end looks very much like a stress fracture.

ETA

I would say that fracture was in the knife when made i.e not your fault. Perhaps contact the manufacturers direct.

I was thinking of contacting Stellar direct as they are make good kitchen utensils and make sure they are aware of maybe a bad batch... scared the fk out of me when the blade snapped like that, as my knives are cared for and never dropped or misused.

I have a set of Anolon knifes, I've been through two of the cleavers. One mysteriously snapped in use, the second came out of the dishwasher in two pieces. It was then I discovered it shouldn't go in there in the first place.

This happened to my Chroma knife after I'd had it about three years. They replaced FOC. Definitely contact them direct.

I'd send them an email, include the pics you've posted here.

Absolute classic fatigue fracture propagating from the "starter" crack you can see at the top that has been corroding for some time. Highly likely to be a manufacturing flaw originally. Send it (or pictures of it) back to Stella, their customer service is excellent in my experience.

those single piece jobbies are usually guaranteed against that, really lay it on thick when you kick off, but you shouldn't have to really as it can obviously be really fing dangerous to have one break on you

This is why I bought it as I dont like the knives with plastic or wood handles so was not expecting it to happen at all.

I have contacted them by email with pictures (3 days ago) and not heard a thing, not even a thanks for telling us kind of email, kind of disappointed they havent even bothered replying to it other than the automation email.

(have had problems with email so I will check before chasing up)

If they were a company worth their salt, they'd give you an apology and a replacement. That is clearly a stress fracture that has split the knife, more than likely caused by a manufacturing defect. Even if it wasn't the manufacturers fault directly, they should have designed the knife to be strong enough to not critically fail in 18 months.

Its no longer made and if memory serves me right it was something like £45 down to £25-£30.

New range is out at stupidly low £10 for same one (10" chief knife).

Not wanting a replacement as its an excuse for me to go knife shopping and OH cant complain... more the acknowledgement would have been nice and them checking if it was a bad batch.

I know that you're not supposed to do this with globals as they may do the same thing, just use your hand.

I've done the same thing with shovels and hammers many times. Metal, it's not much good. Organic self healing tools, that's what we need.
