Mushroom ketchup

Does anyone else use this stuff?

I discovered it a year or so ago in Sainsburys and bought it out of curiosity, and have now successully converted most of my friends and family to it.

It's not like tomato ketchup at all, more like Lea and Perrins and perfect for Bolognaises, cottage pies and things like that. You really don't need very much of it though!

Yep, it's lovely stuff. Not a big fan of mushrooms so never expected to like it much, but it's delicious, ultra savoury.

I pick my own (wild) mushrooms, slice and dry them on paper towels over a radiator, and either crumble or grind them into powder to use as a 'taste adder' to any savoury dish.

However any mushrooms will do.

The odd few supermarket mushrooms left over from a pack which would otherwise be binned, for example.

This stuff is umami central. That explains basically 99% of its appeal

We do. It get's used in stews, sauces, bolognese, chilli etc. Great stuff!

Been using it for years in casseroles, bolognese etc etc. Wouldnt be without it.

Prompted by your post I went to sainsburys to buy a bottle but they didn't seem to stock it even though it's a huge Sainburys. Staff didn't have a clue about it.

Anyone know where else I can get a bottle?

Should be in the specialty section next to the anchovy sauce in a similar bottle (fantastic on pizza)...

They always have loads in my sainsburys, so cant be too bad a seller, its defiantly not with other tomato ketchups.

Sounds nice. I've got a bottle of banana ketchup at home and can't quite decide if I like it or not.

Me too. Mostly like tomato ketchup, but with a sweeter, fruitier hint to it, just unsure!

Mushrooms with attitude?

Hopefully my family don't get wind of this, I hate mushrooms. They seem to enjoy putting mushrooms in meals, knowing that I'll have to inspect each mouthful in case there is a mushroom, go to the chippy instead, or simply scoff the meal down without thinking about the mushrooms so they can say "see, you didn't even notice them!"

I can imagine the conversation now: "How can you like mushroom ketchup but hate mushrooms...?!"

One day I'm going to be a bit adventurous and throw some on some apple crumble and see how it is as a dessert sauce.

I get mine from Sainsburys in Thetford (Norfolk) just off the A11. Saw you're in Cambridge, so thought maybe you use that bit of road

As others have said, it's not with the rest of the ketchups and sauces, it's with the olive oils, specialist foods etc.

"Proper" bananas or plantain/green banana type bananas? I'd have thought the bananas would have cooked down to mush.

Yeah it was proper banana. It was in a town that was basically Banana Town. Absolutely everything was banana based or themed.

I've been trying to remember the name of the town, we went there by train from Curitiba. This chap was the waiter in the restaurant we had the banana casserole in, I'll let you guess why I covertly took a picture of him

I just had a quick look and if you get stuck, you can get it from Amazon for a similar price (plus postage I guess) as it is in Sainsburys

Great when added to gravy for bangers and mash with fried onions.
