chippy that opens in the morning - WTF

there's a chippy in the middle of a council estate that I sometimes pass in the morning, they are open as early as 6am and i've seen the odd person come out with chips!?

A local supermarket has a rotisserie chicken counter that also sells chips, wedges, sausages, nuggets, ribs etc - when I call in first thing (8am) to get milk there is always a steady stream of local kids in uniform tucking into a box of something from there on the way to school.

When I worked just round the corner from Smithfields Meat Market in the early 90s Chippies and pubs were open to cater for the market trade. This was in the era when normal pub opening was 12-3 and 6-11 (or 5 thirty to 10 thirty depending on county). There was always opportunity for fish & chips and a pint before starting work at 8. Nothing new.

But great when you were a student. We weren't popular with the cockney, hard arsed market "Paul Calf" regulars who'd just done a day's work when we piled in after an all nighter...

However the licencing laws meant you could open for the market trade at 06:00 to 09:00 and then for the "evening" trade at 11:00 but not open in the evening. A few at lunch time was good too. Many did not make it back to the office for the afternoon ! All nighters where left to the pubs who did ot cater for the market trade. If you started work at 08:00 you could generally find a beverage 24 hours a day if you followed the trades ! Not sure it works like that any more.

I work on Clerkenwell Rd and park by the market every day - often when I pull up at the office at 7.30 in the morning there are some traders about having a beer or a curry or something in the pubs/cafes. I think the market closes a bit earlier than it used to now as most of the guys want to get away before congestion charge starts at 7AM

By the way - what do these takeaway front for? Is it simple laundering at a real loss - lots of untraceable "cash transactions" to cover other activities? Or do they sell more than just chips?

Perhaps there are lots of shift workers around the shop that like chips for 'tea'?

I like chips as much as the next man (in moderation) but at 8am in the morning WTF. It's like the lard arses at my local cafe who have chips and a can of coke with their fry up! And they wonder why they are fat.

My local DIXY chicken shop opens around 9am, which I always found very odd. Many fried chicken places don't seem to open until at least noon.

chips for brekky....... just no way.... that time is for fried pig products and tea....just not on in my books. that said in my younger days we used to go to a mod night called brighton beach in leeds that finished at 4 am , we used to go to the local caff for a fry up before hitting the sack. it was one of those places that opened realy early in the a.m for the likes of taxi drivers and emergency services... always had a few coppers and such in there tucking into fried pig n black pudding with a brew.
