Riedl wine glasses

Has anyone got any tips on the best place to get these?

Wifey wants a set of white wine glasses for xmas. She's let me know these are the right kind of thing

Obviously buying wine glasses online would be a bit of a gamble what with couriers etc. Really after buying in a shop.

I'm in North Yorkshire, near Harrogate.

Never had any issues online - and they are bloody thin. Just check them when they arrive - carefully.

Only place I've ever seen them for sale is Adnams shop in Southwold.

I ordered a lot direct from Riedel at a "glass tasting" they held. They arrived on a pallet in a huge parcel. There were only about 40 glasses on it!

The shop in Harrogate has some interesting wines in it usually and their staff know their stuff. They've managed to relieve me of a few quid every time I've been in.

Marketing for just about anything is full of nonsense.

However, using the correct glasses for the wine really does make a discernible difference to the taste.

i'd like to do an experiment where the headspace above the wine is sampled using gas chromatography/mass spec (or the sniff detector thingy) to see if the same wine in different glasses has different profiles of volatiles in the head space.

It's not just that though; it's also the way the shape of the glass directs the wine to different parts of the palate. That, at least, is the theory.

At a very simple level, it is clear to me that red Bordeaux and Burgundy both taste better out of their proper shaped glasses than each other's.

I used to sell them, along with lots of other 'designer' glasses and various crystal brands...I would only buy all of them if I won the Euromillions, but the rep held some tastings which totally convince me of the benefits of specific glass shapes for specific wines.

Completely agree. I only use four: red Bordeaux, red Burgundy, white Burgundy and generic white wine.

Pretty similar here: only really use the red bdx, white Burg, CNDP and the BDX decanters regularly.

Buying/storing them aside the other problem with these is that, due to their size, it's very easy to end up with what looks like a rather daunting mountain of glassware to wash if you've had a few people round and several wines on the go simultaneously.

They look lovely but, flip me, £75 per glass!!! Is that right from their website?

Yes, if you go for the sommelier series (hand blown). The Vinums (machine blown) are closer to 20 iirc.
