First of all...merry Christmas and thanks for reading.

I have a relative who is over for the new year but is glutton and wheat intolerant - does anyone have a list of finger/buffet food that would be suitable for such a person?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. My mother is doing the spread and is worried about what she can and cannot eat.

Gluten-free finger food is easy enough to do, but it does mean that almost everything will have to be made from scratch.

Things to beware of are shop-bought dips since these often contain wheat starch to thicken. Also sausages and sausagemeat, unless this is 100% meat with no 'rusk' added.

Some suggestions:

Salmon paté/prawn cocktail/soft cheese in Little Gem lettuce leaves
Guacamole, salsa, hummous etc with celery/carrot sticks for dipping
Celery sticks filled with blue/cream cheese
Filled potato skins
Spicy potato wedges with dips
Hot wings
Baked mushrooms
Stuffed eggs
Prunes wrapped in bacon
Meatballs
Cheese and pineapple on sticks - I so rarely get this, but love it
Peppers with savoury rice stuffing
Frazzled chorizo
Grilled halloumi cheese
Onion bhajis
Spinach and potato pakoras
Cubes of salmon marinated in soy, ginger, garlic and grilled on skewers
Skewered and grilled king prawns
Chicken satays
Mini Spanish omelettes

You can do a lot of stuff yourself, as suggested. Our Xmas dinner was all GF.

Over the last couple of years there is a lot of new stuff available in the supermarkets - but you need to look at every label and expect the unexpected. M & S has a lot of stuff - even breaded ham now - if you don't want to do your own cooked joint. For bread I'm told the best is ''Yes You Can'' from Tesco. Mrs Mercs is the intolerant one.

If you want to totally impress - and avoid cross contamination issues - aim for one GF buffet. A bit of a learning curve though for a one off event.

Thanks everyone. This means a lot and is very much appreciated - I will pass the information on. Fortunately it's not me preparing the food as I burn toast!
