Champagne

The major supermarkets seem to have all of these discounted to about £15 per bottle for New Year:

- Lanson Black Label
- Heidseick Blue Monopole
- Heidseick Gold Top
- Nicolas Feuillate
- Piper-Heidseick

I need to buy a few cases. Alas budget will not stretch to VC or PR.

My perception is that Piper-H and Heidseick Gold Top are the best of those. Any champagne buffs around who disagree?

Had the blue monopole yesterday. Was alright, tasted like every other Champagne really !

I find Nicolas Feuillatte is rather nice for general quaffery. One of the older cooperatives in the champagne region, and when on offer pretty good value. Be worth getting one of each to try first

I am not a champagne fan, the only one I have tasted and can honestly say I liked is Dom Perignon, the rest taste like acid to me, but I bought six cases of M&S champers for my new place and it tastes really nice.

I bought so much because it was a genuine half price @ £15. It has since been offered with an extra 15% of this price if you buy a certain amount. Free delivery too.

The drink is well respected and gets many superb reviews.

Of all those, I'd probably go for the Lanson (especially if you have space to store it for a while as it improves noticeably with a little bottle age).

As has been suggested though, nothing to lose buy buying a couple of them to see which you prefer.

Sainsbugs is also doing Etienne Dumont for £15 down from its usual £32 -another good buy and can be kept for a year or so if you want

Of the original list I would go for Nicolas Feuillatte, since I find it to be "all purpose" in that most people seem to like it and it seems to suit most occasions and goes well with a range of foods.

Having said that, there are no bad names in there so buy a few different ones and then stock up on the one you like

The Lanson gets my vote every time. As long as you stick to the black label, you'll have a very full bodied, very dry Champagne. IMHO, it beats all of the others on that list by a margin, for texture and taste. The monopole blue would be my back up, I wouldn't be ashamed to serve the others to guests at a party. I'd keep the Lanson for me though .
